Bayelsa Assembly Member Dies After Mysterious Fall from Apartment Building

Segun James in Yenagoa.
A member of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, Mr. Obedient Emoto, has died following injuries sustained from a fall from the first floor of his duplex home in the Legislative Quarters, Yenagoa.
Emoto, who was representing Ogbia Constituency II of Ogbia Local Government Area at the State House of Assembly, died on Tuesday about 3.30pm in Port-Harcourt, Rivers State, was said to have jumped down from the building, a situation that led to multi fractures.
He was aged 62 years at the time of the fall.
Although most sources spoken to by ThisDay ruled out suicide as cause of the jump, people were still stupefied as to why a man in his sixties would take such a jump.
ThisDay however gathered from some members of his constituency that the deceased House of Assembly member took the jump following a domestic scuffle with his wife over alleged drunkenness and late night movements.
It was gathered that it was in an attempt by his wife to dissuade him from going on another night movement following a call and his insistence on going out that he jumped from the building, a situation that led to the multiple leg fracture.
Contacted, the Information Officer to the deceased Assembly member,
Mr. Majesty Naigba, confirmed the demise of his boss and simply said: “He died of complications from leg injury and his body has been deposited at the morgue of the Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital in Rivers State”.
Reacting to the development, the former acting Governor of the state, Chief Nestor Binabo, confirmed the development describing the death of his colleague as tragic and devastating.
The late lawmaker was elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) but lost a second term ticket last year.
Some of his constituents described him as a selfless and honest lawmaker while others referred to him as a man of outstanding integrity.
